U3A Nature visits The Fairy Pools

The Fairy Pools are a small series of pools and waterfalls where the tiny rivers Allt Choire' a' Mhadaidh and Allt Coir' a' Tairneilear come together in the valley Coire na Creiche at the foot of the Cuillin in Glen Brittle.

A fairy pool

Apparently an iron oxide (rust) residue originating in the overflowing water from the peat bog.

One of several lichens which hopefully we will soon have identified via iSpot.

We don't know whether these are different species of lichen or just the same lichen which has adopted different pigmentations under the influence of diverse environments.

Even iSpot may struggle with this one.

More fairy pool rockery

Spot the golden eagle circling around the base of Sgurr an Fheadain.

The huge tail and short neck indicate a golden eagle rather than a white tailed eagle.

Note the interesting boundary phenomenon between these lichen growths.

Is this a moss on a lichen or on a moss? More information to follow.

Another lichen for identification. Great colour scheme!

For iSpot

And finally one for the entomologists.

Looking back at the gloomy Sgurr an Fheadain, with the waterpipe gully clearly visible.
